Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Father (as in paternal parent, not God) (04/10/08)
Another Saturday morning has rolled around and here I am, up at the crack of dawn as usual. I could have slept in, but I didn't. I never do. Tomorrow morning, Sunday morning, I"ll be right here pecking away at the keyboard getting the bulletin ready for church. Though it may be one of my favorite responsibilities, it is a responsibility none the less. When Monday gets here and it's time to go back to work again I'll be up early without fail and I'll there on time and ready to do my job to best of my ability. As a truck driver I will obey all of the traffic laws, or most of them anyway, and I'll drive the truck with the other cars and trucks on the road around me in mind. Watching out for the other guy is something that is important to avoid accidents. The left lane is for passing only. Look ahead and make your actions known. Don't brake too fast. During my stops along the way I'll be kind and considerate to any and all of the people that I might encounter. I'll say hello to strangers. Hold the door open for the person behind me when entering a building. If given the opportunity, I'll have a joke ready to tell to some of the people that I deal with on a regular basis while the truck is being unloaded or while the paper work is being signed. After the week of work is done, if God is willing and with good weather, maybe I'll go fishing. If I do, I'll know just how to launch the boat, bait the hook, and cast the line. If I get a bite I'll know just how to let it take the bait, set the hook, and reel it in.

For the most part, the simple day to day actions that I take and the routines that I go through are taken for granted. How I drive. How I treat other people. My sense of humor. What I know about boats and fishing. How, for what ever reason, I feel compelled to get each day started early. It's very easy to go through life without thinking about these things at all and to just chalk them up to "that's just the way I am". While these things do define me as a person, if I allow myself to think about it, all of these things were taught to me by my dad. Dad has been gone for some twenty-five years now, but his teachings and influence on me remains still today. So much of who I am as a person is directly connected to who he was as a person. When I think about in this way, I guess Dad never did and never will really leave at all. He will be with me in the truck come Monday. He'll join me for coffee early tomorrow morning. And if God is willing and with good weather, maybe we'll go fishing next weekend.

I knew what where you were headed with this and I loved it. Adding more spaces between thoughts would help the reader.

I loved the tie back at the end.

My only complaint would be that I wanted all of your words, all 750 of them. Keep writing.

Very nice. I enjoyed this read.

I'd suggest breaking up some of your long paragraphs into shorter ones, just for readability. A bit more detail would be wonderful, too.

A wonderful tribute - and character sketch. Keep it up!

I enjoyed this story. It's hard to fit everything you want to into just 750 words, but you have done a good job. Well done.
