My family has just experienced the pleasure of surprising my (maternal) grandmother for her 90th birthday. We threw a huge bash in her honor and she was thrilled to pieces. She thought the family was just taking her out to dinner; nothing unusual for our family. So when she was escorted by her sons and grandsons into the reception area of the banquet hall, and faced a room filled with about 200 people, she was overwhelmed.
All she could do was cry, and that’s all we could do as well. That became a very special and unforgettable moment for me. I felt so honored that this great woman who touched so many lives was my grandmother. I had the privilege of writing and reading a tribute to my grandmother on behalf of all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was a delightful time of remembering, reminiscing, and reflecting on the life we shared with our beloved Madear. We collaborated and came up with an awesome and touching tribute that moved us all to tears and laughter.
Madear, my only living grandparent, and my paternal grandfather, Paw Frank, represent (for me) rare jewels. They were very active in my life even though they didn’t have to be. My parents were great. I can’t recall one time that my parents accused them of being meddlesome. They just enjoyed us and we enjoyed them. My grandfather could do anything in my eyes. He was like a father to me and I love him so much.
I love to observe my father as he watches my children at play, with such endearment in his eyes. He told me that looking at my two-year old daughter is like looking at me at that age (all over again). I’ve heard so many times that being a grandparent is a gift because they get to sit back and watch their own children (now parents) encounter the same behavior from their children that they dished out when they were growing up. It’s sweet revenge for the grandparents. They get such a kick out of it. I’ve called my mother several times to vent about my children’s behavior, wondering where it comes from. She would just get so tickled, and say, “I know exactly where it comes from”.
Grandparents have a special love relationship with their grandchildren. Unlike the parents, they are always the “good guys” because normally, they are not the primary disciplinarians. Instead, they do all the spoiling – gleefully I might add. They are the grandchildren’s defenders.
Life is hectic, I know. But as our grandparents age, I believe it is imperative to delight them by spending quality time with them. We should never let them feel forgotten, too much trouble, or “in the way”. They mean too much to our families.
God bless all grandparents.
