Instead, Karrie and I sat next to each other, facing Nicole and Renea, as she unleashed her most recent worries to us.
“Seriously, has no one asked Andrew yet?” she asked Nicole anxiously. Nicole was one of our closest friends, but she spent more time with Andrew’s group of friends than anyone else.
“Completely serious.” Nicole didn’t sound quite as worried as Karrie did. I doodled on the worksheet we were supposed to be working on.
“But it’s Andrew, he’s like, my absolute favorite.” Her voice sounded slightly whiny. I looked up at her in irritation.
“Since when have you and Andrew even talked?” I didn’t try to keep the exasperation out of my voice. She had already gone on and on about how much weight she needed to lose during our lunch period, although she was honestly the skinniest person I knew. There wasn’t a spare patch of weight anywhere on her body. I, on the other hand, while not exactly overweight, parade around five or ten extra pounds than are necessary for my height. It’s not anything that I usually fret about, but hearing Karrie go on and on about it convinced me to throw my lunch away early. Now, my stomach was growling.
“Are you kidding? He’s my bud,” she assured me, and started making a list of available girls. So far, she had two.
I lifted my head up for a moment, and caught eyes with Will. We both grinned sheepishly as we were caught staring at each other, and I looked away first. Will was my Sadie’s date. He had asked me to homecoming, and we had gone on a couple of dates since then, but neither one of us were bold enough to make any more moves than that. So, we settled as friends.
Karrie let out a groan. “Guys, this is so horrible! What are we going to do? We can’t leave Andrew without a date, I swear, he is the absolute sweetest guy I’ve ever met!”
“Why don’t you ask him then?” Renea suggested darkly, and it wasn’t hard to see the effort she was expending to maintain the peace. If Karrie had been paying attention at all, she might have noticed as well.
Someone might as well have asked her to kill somebody. She ran her fingers through her hair while shaking her head.
“No, no, we’re all wrong for each other! Besides, my grandma…”
“I know. Is taking you shoe shopping,” I said. “I thought you said ya’ll were best ‘buds?’”
“Well, we are, but best buds are completely different than relationship material. Trust me, I would know. And I don’t ever want to make the same mistakes Scott and I made. I couldn’t ever go through that again.” She shook her head again, sighing as she did. Nicole gave me a questioning look as to who Scott was. I just rolled my eyes.
Scott was her boyfriend at the beginning of freshman year. They went out for maybe three months, before they both realized at the same time they weren’t meant for each other. They broke up over a text message conversation, extremely mutual. She hadn’t had a boyfriend since. Of course, she blamed that on her not wanting to make the same mistakes she made with Scott. She used it maybe once a week.
Karrie continued to express her worry for Andrew every couple of minutes. She came up with a total list of five people she thought could ask him, and planned to carry out her plans immediately.
About twenty minutes before the bell rang, I had to escape. I asked permission to go to the restroom.
At first, I thought I had to be seeing things. But no, Andrew was walking down the hall towards me, and I had to keep from laughing out loud. But curiosity overcame me, and in an uncharacteristically bold move, I asked him about Sadie’s.
“Who are you going with Andrew?”
“No one.” He smiled, and for a moment, I couldn’t help siding with Karrie. Why hadn’t this guy gotten a date?
“Has no one asked you?” I said innocently, and he laughed softly.
“A few people, actually. But I have a hockey tournament this weekend. So I had to say no.”
