“Oh, do calm down!” Elaine said. “Getting angry isn’t going to help. We can pick it all up”.

My wife and I were driving over to our eldest daughter’s place to give her a rather special rose bush. It was a Chamelion which, as its name suggests, changes colour. When the buds open they are deep yellow, then they turn red and finally fade to pink then white. I have taken many cuttings of this rose and potted new plants for family and friends.

On this particular day I had carefully placed a Chamelion on the back seat of the car. A particularly splendid specimen, it was in a terracotta pot, with the top soil suitably firmed down with wood chip. All went well until I took a corner a little too suddenly and then, disaster, the Chamelion on its side, with rose, soil and woodchip strewn along the car seat. What a mess!

It was too much after all my careful preparations. I was angry with myself for being so careless. Our daughter’s special rose now lay dying on the car seat. Elaine’s “do calm down” exasperated me as I pulled off the road. It was all right for her to be so cool. She hadn’t grown and potted the rose, had she! It was my own fault, my dilemma, my problem.

As I simmered down we worked together, putting rose, soil and wood chip back in the terracotta pot. It wasn’t quite as well done as when it was first potted, but at least the rose was back where it was meant to be and I was already beginning to feel better. Soiled hands and smudged pot could be dealt with when we reached our daughter’s place.

‘Picking it all up’ proved to be a useful lesson. We did what we could in the circumstances and our daughter’s joy in accepting the Chamelion was worth it all.

How often in life these "little" things happen and throw us for a loop! Good lesson here.

This is a nice little story. Could have easily been switched it to a devotional by adding a Bible verse to it or if you want to keep it fiction -- you can expand it, show us more than tell us what happened. Embellish your story. Have some fun with it! Nice job!

I liked this. Though short, it fit the topic and was still an enjoyable read. I do think that it could be expanded on if the author wishes to do so.
