Wondering how he ever got to this place at the table with the Rabbi, the despised tax collector hung on every word that flowed so eloquently and graciously from the Master's tongue. No one had ever spoken with such authority or grace. Furthermore no Rabbi had ever backed his word with action. The Rabbi's influence had prompted the hated tax collector to pay back most of what he had collected over and above what was required since he had begun to follow this man who spoke as the oracles of G-d.

Cursing had once spewed from the rough fisherman's mouth when the nets had broken once too often for his liking. But he loved hauling in those nets filled to overflowing with fish that commanded a good price at the market just like his father and his father's father before him. And he had made a very good living at it too. Now sitting at the table with the Master he wondered where his life would take him. Little did he know it would influence multitudes for years to come and fulfill the promise G-d made to father Abraham. Little did he know the nets of his testimony would pull in such huge hauls of converts for the one he had come to love.

Yes, Father had chosen well the company for his son. These offscouring of the world would come to love him more than their own lives. And God would display his glory through the very ones the world despised.
There's no telling what unconditional, limitless love can do as evidenced by the life of the very gift of love himself.
