She was alone now, sitting and rocking in her chair, beside his now vacant one… She just stared at the lifeless chair, so stark, resting hauntingly still in its place… Next year would have been their fifty-fourth anniversary... A thought flitted through her mind, “Do I still celebrate my anniversary, even though half of me is in heaven? Half of me is in heaven.” She thought… She still expected to see him, sitting there in the chair… How long would it take for reality to rob away the lingering aroma of one so dear?

Memories came flooding into her mind, bringing with them, a feeling of grief and emptiness... How could she go on? He had always been the motivator… The stirring of her life’s movements… He would have climbed Mt. Everest if he’d had more time... And if he did it, he’d expect her to be right there along side him… He had taken her on one adventure after another… And what a life it had been… Mission trips to Africa, Alaska’s Inuits, the Philippines church building program… What a life they had lived…

But all that had changed when he became sick and died so suddenly…. Here, then gone…And even though life had slowed a bit lately, he’d still been the lively one, and she’d been the quiet one… He was a builder and she was a nurse… He was the kite, and she was the kite’s tail! He reached for the world, while she applauded! Now she felt incomplete… He’d just gone on to the greatest adventure yet! But she knew this was one time, he had to go alone. The kite had broken loose and she had fallen to the ground in a heap… Where to go from here… What good is a kite’s tail, without a kite?

Yet somewhere on life’s journey she had changed… She knew at some point she too, had become an adventurer. Living with an adventurer, couldn’t help but create an adventurer… She thought about the little church, they had helped plant together in the Philippines. All those little children, some orphaned, began to appear in her mind’s eye… They were scheduled in just two weeks from now, for a 6 week trip to encourage the young pastors there. He’d never see the little church in the Philippines again… Then a sudden thought struck her.. Maybe she could be a kite… She could still go... Why not? She was still able to encourage! She also could hug the stuffings out of those precious children! She laughed now, realizing a new adventure was appearing on the horizon! Now there were two chairs sitting empty…
