Grandfather, a preacher; dad, one of the most active members at church; mum, a Sunday school teacher for years and me, their only daughter and the church’s newly recruited Sunday school teacher – a family of people serving God. What more does God need? That is what I used to think and that is what I used to be proud of.
God’s word says that if we seek his kingdom first, he will bless us with every other blessing. That was true in my life. At 23 years, I was blissfully happy. I did not face any lack of material or spiritual blessings. My most prized possession was my room to which I would often retire whenever I wanted to be undisturbed. The only things I lacked were pain and sorrow and loss. But I always thought “Well, that is a blessing right!”
I never knew that at that time God was thinking “This vessel looks good, but not the beauty that I wanted it to be.” For that he needed to refine it and shape it anew. So, God felt that he needed my daddy much more than I needed him. Nothing was the same again. Mom and I had to leave our beloved home and move over to my grandparents’ place (that’s because no one was comfortable with the idea of two ladies staying alone at night). Soon after this, God took away my beloved uncle. And right after that my dear grandma was diagnosed with cancer. All this happened in a matter of six months, those six months during which God made me experience what I had lacked – pain and sorrow and loss, but through which I learnt like how to appreciate small joys, identify with the pain of those in similar situations, pray for those in sorrow and need and most important I learnt to adjust to any situation. Remember I had always loved to be alone in my precious room? That became a rare treat during those months. God’s blessings come in mysterious ways. These circumstances were a blessing to my soul and contributed much more to shaping up my relationship with God.
He is the potter and we are the clay. He looks beyond the outward glow and works hard to remove the dross that lies hidden inside.
…..all our righteousness are as filthy rags…. Isaiah 64:6

It may have lacked focus a bit, and a stronger tie-in both to the topic and to your own lesson.
How wonderful that you have been able to find grace through the tough times!
