Birthdays, whether people want them to be or not, are a time of reflection. They are the yearly opportunity to remember one’s past mistakes, past successes, and to learn from both of them. They are a reminder of the faithfulness of the Lord in years past. They are little glimpses of yesterday that bring to our minds the ways He’s been at work in our lives.
As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes, there is a time for everything. It is true that there is a time to meditate on the past, but there is also a time to lay aside the “could have beens” for the “might bes” of the future. A future that spreads before us, bright with promise, and radiating with the light that is God guiding us on the path He has chosen for us. Birthdays hold the hope of that future, the knowledge that much can happen between birthdays, and that once again God has blessed us with another year of life to live for Him.
Birthdays are not just another day on the calendar. They’re not just the mark of the passage of time. They serve to remind, to inspire. Look beyond the day, beyond the wax candles, to the one who created it all. Created you. And seek to learn from the past, as you move into the future, to see how you might live for Him more...
