Tori leaned against the wall and reached for his shoulder, “But baby, just slow down. Listen, I’ve been praying for you for years and nobody’s happier than me. But you’ve got to take your medicine. How long has it been?”
“Why aren’t you happy for me? Isn’t this what becoming a Christian is about?” Steven looked into her blue eyes and was surprised to see fear. “What? Aren’t I supposed to have faith in God, and to trust Him with my life? With Him, can’t I overcome anything? I want to show God how thankful I am that He’s come into my life. Don’t you get that!? I almost died!” There. The root of his anguish was now exposed. God had saved him. Steve owed Him his faith.
“Steve. Calm down. I really understand and your intentions are so honorable. I can’t tell you how proud I am of you, but God doesn’t expect this. How long has it been?”
He didn’t answer, but paced slowly to the window, and turned back towards her. She looked beautiful in the shadow-light of the blinds, alternating bands of light and dark layered across her auburn hair. He hated this. “Three daaaiii daagh, daagh…”
The words choked in his mouth and his eyes rolled upwards, trying to see the inside of his skull. Steve’s muscles, rigid and unforgiving, twitching rapidly, held him up for several seconds. His hands bent outwards at his wrists, beyond the limits of what was consciously possible. As Tori covered the short distance between them, he slowly leaned forward, but there wasn’t enough time. He awkwardly collapsed at her feet, his knees struck the floor, his right shoulder next.
Tori gently scooped Steve’s head into her lap, whispering demands, “Stop it! Just stop it...Please…Steven Philip…Please…please…stop.” He shook viciously as if a fault line had given way with his body as the epicenter. Sobbing, she closed her eyes, blinking tears from them, sliding down her face and then falling to his.
The last thing Steve remembered was his mind skipping like a badly scratched CD, playing a single, distorted syllable again and again and again.
Steve awoke…in a manner of speaking. He didn’t feel quite awake, his mind still muddled, strange echoes dancing between his ears, memories spinning behind his eyes. One of them opened and closed again. Then both blinked at the vivid, antiseptic light that shone down from above.
“It’s ok Steve.” Tori. She was there. “It’s ok. You had a seizure.”
He squeezed his eyes shut. No. NO. “God, why?” A tear began to collect in the corner of an eye. “How could you?”
