I entered the church a broken woman – broken in body and in spirit. I had given up on God because I thought He had given up on me. However, I still felt the need to reconnect with Him. The best way to do that was to go to His house.

My friend pushed my wheelchair into the niche designed for it, and we waited for the service to begin. Suddenly the organ burst forth with music, and the choir stood to begin the opening hymn. A wonderful feeling came over me, and I thought, “I am home.”

I entered into the life of the church. Small groups, prayer teams, helping with the skateboard ministry, writing poetry for the newsletter, and singing in the choir: all these activities have helped me to grow in my faith life. The social activities and Bible study groups have given me the opportunity to meet and know people of different backgrounds. The church is my refuge, my community, my home.

What a home it has been! I chose to be baptized, and several of my new friends agreed to stand with me. I am in the thoughts and prayers of many, and a few see me as a sister in Christ. I have godparents and brothers and sisters; I couldn’t ask for more.
