churning. The words on the page, well they were all a blur. I looked up then wished I
hadn’t, all those people. Speak, who ME? But what else could I do they were all on their
knees just waiting for me, waiting to pray. “Merciful Father....” oh NO that’s at the end.
The Pulpit was strong and sturdy, made of fine oak it was, it needed to be to contend with
my firm, penetrating grip. This is a wonderful experience I said to myself and you are not
on your own, (no I don’t mean all these people) the Lord is with you. Oh sorry, the people
the congregation I mean, yes they are important too. Oh dear what am I doing, why did I
agree to do this? It’s all the Churchwarden’s fault, she asked me. Then He spoke, “Hush
child I am with you, we will do this together.” Gosh it’s Him and He’s really here. Yes I
thought, I feel comfortable now I can do this, “Gracias Lord” (oh by the way I forgot to
mention I was in Spain on holiday at the time) so I took a deep breath, opened my mouth,
said a silent prayer then the words began to flow. I prayed for the Church, the sick and the
departed............... then it really was “Merciful Father..... Amen.”
I looked up and smiled at the Reverend ... I had done it, WE had done it the Lord and me,
WE stood together.
I will let you into a little secret, I have done it many times since and He is always with me
holding my hand leading by example. So, if you ever get the chance to stand at the Pulpit go
for it and then you too can say “Reverend WE did it”..... Phew!
