In the story of the two brothers, Cain and Abel in the Bible, Cain murdered his brother in the field. Earlier, God has respected Abel’s sacrificial offering over his and became jealous. When God asked Cain on the whereabouts of his brother after his sinful act, he defensively answered “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gen 4:9)

God kept us in churches, as brothers and sisters-in-Christ. We are as different spiritual family units named even in the heavens (Eph 3:15). God saved us and caused us to exist as HIS children bonded in love and faith. HE has never leave or forsaken any, yes even those isolated in prisons and labor camps. God ensures every one of them is prayed for or visited by. Such perfected love God has for HIS children that we are continuously lead in groups, and yet as individuals towards fulfillment of HIS promises.

As a Christian of ten years, I have not attended Sunday church services even half of those years. I lived as an “underground” child of God, the first in the family to accept Christ. God had paved a way for me to attend church regularly, when I studied away from my hometown for three years. I was glad to have befriended true brothers and sisters-in-Christ in a church then. A faithful one of whom I continuously kept in touch is also my uncle, of flesh and blood.

He would call me up occasionally to do some form of spiritual checking. They would be indicators to gauge my closeness with the Heavenly Father. A feedback system for him to know what is my current status and encourages me to not stop knowing more of HIM. He is definitely a wise guy; asking me to assist him to pray, prepare sermons and even become a worship leader in a “secret” cell group of four. He shares to me challenging God’s Words that stir up my heart as well. These Words change and transform me, besides keeping me at bay to fear the Lord always. A brother’s keeper would show such exemplary behaviors, beyond having pity and sympathy. I would not have grown one bit, if I continue to mourn over my disadvantage position. And I am glad to undergo this process of maturing in God, not through spoon-feeding of knowledge. I have to slog like others in this learning process, to appreciate God-given blessings from above.

I have been well-coached and not blindly-taught. I am not induced into moral teachings under the law to be just another ordinary, good gal in the street. I am reshape and mold to become a child of God, moving by the Holy Spirit. A keeper who is in the Light will keep both himself or herself and his fellow brother or sister away from darkness (1 Jn 2:10). Thank God, for keepers who pat us on our backs and high-time for us to pat others as well. This is a trade worth mastering. Amen!
