They were at the door now and his mommy was taking him over to his chair. Absolutely delighted to find it a small chair made just for him, he sat down and looked at his teacher. With a twinkle in her eye, she smiled cheerfully and welcomed him to class. All the other little children were watching him, some were smiling and some were just curious.
Then the teacher began to pass out their coloring papers. It was a picture of David facing the giant Goliath with just his little sling and bag of rocks. David was one of his favorite people in the Bible. In fact, he and his brother liked to act out the story. It was always such great fun to let that rock fly out of his sling to fell his big brother Goliath.
After his teacher finished passing out the papers, she opened up her bag and began to pull out more crayons than he had seen in his short life. Such wonderful, new and shiny crayons! None were broken or had the paper ripped off. She gave each of them a little box of crayons and said that it was theirs and only theirs. He could not believe it! He had his own little box of crayons and they were brand-new and brilliant. From then on, he just knew that he would love Sunday school.
Many years later, he still thinks about that first day in Sunday school at the big age of four and how he got that little box of crayons. He knows the teacher went on and read a story from the Bible, but he couldn’t tell you what that story was. All he can remember is the kindness of his teacher and how she gave him a brand-new box of crayons.
