Sokha, the supervisor of the boy’s dorms was shocked. His job was to look after the Bible school students who lived on campus. The school had a no alcohol policy yet this first year student was drunk. Empty bottles littered the floor and the smell of “srar tnum” hung in the air.
Bun, the drunken student was celebrating. He was excited that he had come first in his class at the Bible school.
Sokah was upset that a student would break the rule. As well as being upset he was stunned that Bun was flaunting his disobedience.
“The discipline committee wants to see you today,” Sokah informed Bun in the morning.
When another student found out he was afraid for Bun. “Must be serious. Hardly anyone gets sent there, only if they’re getting expelled or something.”
A year and a half previously Bun’s hometown pastor had asked if he wanted to go to study at the Bible school. He had accepted thinking it would be good to have a job as a pastor, but it wasn’t his only career option.
“If they expel me I can just go back to my hometown. I could work as a driver or an electrician. Maybe I could go back to working on the fishing boat.” He wasn’t worried.
He walked into the room where the five school leaders were waiting for him, in his mind already weighing up the pros and cons of jobs he could get.
However, when he left the room his thoughts were not of fishing boats. They had not expelled him for his drunkenness. Rather they had caused him to reflect on his life.
“Is there any new life in me?” he began to examine himself.
“Who is Jesus?” he examined his beliefs.
Over the last few years Jesus had been his companion, like a bodyguard. He knew Jesus to be the most powerful god he could call on when in trouble.
It began to dawn on him that he needed to surrender his life to this god.
After this meeting with the discipline committee his life began to change. He accepted Jesus as his saviour, and his Lord. He stopped drinking and tried to stop smoking.
Years before his hometown pastor had baptised him in the Mekong River. Now, finally this symbol of beginning a new life in Christ was a reality in his life.
