Topic: New Year (05/09/05)
New Year's Eve is the day on which I pack up the moments of the current year and send them off to live in the memory of my mind. I label them as lessons, losses, surprises, blessings, and hopes for the future. It is my way of stating that a season of yesterdays have passed, so that I may turn with purpose to the days that bear no witness or revelation, leaving me in suspicion of what may come.

As the hours pass, I find myself creating possible scenarios for the next year: a new job in a different city...a good acquaintance who makes the transition to becoming a dear friend...more wisdom and comfort with who I am.

My prayers for the new year center on strength, to stand on the difficult days that will inevitably come with the good. I pray that I maintain and deepen my faith in God by exercising it daily, that I have the determination to please Him in all that I do, that I extend the mercy and grace He has shown to me to those around me. I acknowledge that I cannot live this New Year alone.

December 31 is a good, solid milestone that I look forward to with the passing of each year. It is a time to let go of mistakes and disappointments so that I can grasp hold of something better. A new year, even with its suspense, brings the familiarity of one thing that will remain--the enduring presence and faithfulness of the living God, who promises to walk each moment with me.

I like the imagery of 'packing up' the old year and starting out fresh again.

Very well written. I like the part where you "turn with purpose" and that you are left "in suspicion of what may come." Confidence with a dash of unsureness (is that a word?).
