Corporate worship provides an avenue of surrender to the Lord. When the battle rages between heaven and hell, the only way to win is to surrender to Christ. Praising Him through corporate worship provides us with this opportunity.
Corporate worship has changed over the last decade. A traditional church today would have been a holy roller church 20 years ago. When I was a child, it was not normal to raise your hands in worship at the churches I attended . We might sing about it or read about it in scripture, but you did not do it. Today, raising hands in worship is becoming normal. Exactly what is the purpose of hands raised to the Lord? I don’t like to call attention to myself, and I’m not comfortable with any type of personal exhibition; however, I find myself wanting to lift my hands toward heaven during worship. Why is this? After much thought and soul searching, I have the answer to both questions.
What happens when a robber walks into a store and pulls a gun? People immediately raise their hands. Whether they or told to “stick ‘em up” or not, it is automatic. Hands go up clearly in surrender. When a battle rages and one side gives up, they raise their hands in surrender. That is the point. Hands raised are a sign of surrender. Don’t shoot. I’ll do what you want. When we raise our hands heavenward to God, we are surrendering to Him. We give up doing it our way and seek to do it God’s way. We are releasing ourselves to Him.
Corporate worship provides an avenue to praise the Lord and surrender to Him. The next time you are involved in corporate worship, look around. Once you come to this realization of surrender, it is inspiring to see a congregation of believers surrendering their all to Christ. Imagine the tears of joy in heaven at this sight.
