This all started the day my wife went into labor with our first child – 12 weeks early! She had worked a swing shift and because it was late when she would get home and she didn’t want to disturb me (two jobs and a full-time student, so sleep was a rarity), she stayed with her mom when she got off work. The phone rang at six in the morning and it was her brother telling me that she was on the way to the hospital because she had gone into labor.
Of course, I hurriedly got up and dressed, jumped into the car and rushed to the hospital. On my way, her ambulance actually passed me on the road so I simply sped up and followed it.
When we got to the hospital, she was taken immediately to the “Distressed Delivery” rooms, which were connected by an over-the-street tunnel to the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, one of the premier neo-natal facilities on the east coast (first miracle). As soon as I got through the front door, a nurse I had never seen met me and said that I needed to follow her up to the delivery room (second miracle). She got me there and got me a set of scrubs so I could go into the delivery room.
I managed to get into the delivery room about 30 seconds too late. My new son was already born, but was totally blue and hadn’t started breathing on his own yet. Another minute passed, incredibly slowly as every second ticked by. You know how the entire world slows down to the super-slo-mo camera when something really serious is going on – just like that for us.
In the back of my mind, I could hear my wife start to cry as one doctor after another walked away from the table holding my son, each saying in turn, “I’m so sorry there’s nothing more I can do.”
After the last doctor moved away, the same nurse that met me at the door walked up and shouted in a James Earl Jones type of voice, “Not this one. You shall NOT claim this one.” (Believe me, that voice did NOT sound right coming from a smallish woman.) And in the blink of an eye, she had cleared his lungs, turned him over, spanked his little blue bottom and gotten him to cry out, weakly but beautifully. (third miracle)
Sheepishly, every doctor in the room walked back over to the table and bowed his head towards the nurse. As she was holding my son, she looked at each doctor over her mask, one after the other. It had gotten so quiet you could hear a pin drop and every doctor in the room started crying. Looking at each doctor in turn, the nurse very simply said, “Please forgive yourself because you are already forgiven.” (fourth miracle, although 2000 years old)
And then she took my son in her arms through the tunnel to the Children’s Hospital and the neo-natal specialists took over.
Later, after everything settled down a little bit and my wife dozed off in her room, I went to the nurse’s station to learn the name of the very special lady who had basically saved my son. After I finished describing her, the Head Nurse had no idea who I was talking about. And the same story repeated itself all through the hospital and all through the Children’s Hospital. Nobody had ever seen a nurse or doctor meeting the description I gave.
My wife and I are convinced to this day that God sent an angel to save our son and to speak directly to the hearts of each of those doctors. And my son is now in the Army about to ship out to Korea for his first real assignment. (fifth miracle)
