“His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
'And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'” Matthew 25:26-27,30 (NIV)
Wicked. Lazy. Worthless. The words echoed in Dazzle's mind. He turned from the darkness toward the door. The seams of light at the top and bottom of the door were the only illumination of the vast darkness. Dazzle had been forced from the building stilled gripped by the surprise and shock of the judgment against him.
“It's not fair!!” he shouted at the closed door. “I didn't do anything wrong!”
From inside the building music started playing. The promotion of two of his former co-workers was being celebrated. Dazzle pounded the door until his hands burned. “You didn't give me enough to work with...Willing got twice as much as I did and I've been with the company twice as long!!” Willing was so lucky.
The music got louder.
He should have given me another chance, Dazzle thought. I could really show him something if he gave me as much as he gave Diligence. That guy always got what he wanted.
Dazzle searched for a way to open the door. Diligence got five times as much as I did. I'm sure I can change the boss's mind if I can get in and talk to him.
He couldn't find a door knob or handle. No doorbell. No source of light. He put his shoulder to the door and pushed. Dazzle always prided himself on his strength, but the door wouldn't budge.
He listened to the laughter and music from inside. He sank to his knees.
How could I be so stupid? Dazzle looked out into the deep darkness. Put it in the bank. Why didn't I think of that? I had been so angry when I didn't get as much as the others. So I did nothing.
As Dazzle got to his feet, ideas of how he could have doubled, even tripled his endowment flooded his mind. He stared at the seams of light. The master had been generous. He knew that now.
Tears streaming down his face, Dazzle turned and walked into the darkness.
