Not everyone has had the kind of mom the cards speak of
Not everyone knows the soothing touch of a mother’s love
Not everyone has felt a mother’s sweet soothing caress
Not everyone can speak of a mother’s tenderness.
Not all of us have known a mother’s calming touch and grace
Not all of us beheld a mother’s gentle loving face
Not all of us have felt the arms of her warm embrace
These are not the legacy left to me by mother.
I always felt so phony when I had to buy a card
Making a decision was, for me, so very hard
I felt exceedingly dirty because those darned cards made me lie
I would’ve rather faced her wrath for me, then die.
I always felt great shame at society forcing me to choose
Since my dear sweet mother left me with many a vibrant bruise
They weren’t always clearly visible so it seemed I’d no excuse
Not to celebrate my kind beloved mother.
I often thought and felt that perhaps I’d been damaged for life
Even though I’d long ago heard about a man called Jesus Christ
Oh God, how I stumble as I walk from rage and strife
Dear sweet Lord I thank you for eternal life.
You know how I still struggle with bitterness and shame
Not yet quite believing that you will free me from my pain
Not believing it to be possible for peace and joy to reign
Not trusting you for my healing once again.
Mom, I can’t believe it is another Mother’s Day without you
Nor can I believe my heart’s no longer feeling blue
For I’ve so much to be thankful that I very rarely cry
‘Cause I no longer wait to die.
I thank you for the gift of pain I learned at your hand and knee
I thank you for the depth of shame that enabled me to clearly see
I thank you for the hidden bruises and great stress you poured on me
I thank you that I quickly learned to flee.
For now, a decade later, I belong to Jesus Christ
I would have never truly known Him nor had eternal life
Had knowing you not driven me to Calvary o’er and o’er again
God alone knows, this day, where I would have been.
Now I will see Jesus one day soon, face to face
Now I will behold Him and feel His warm embrace
Now I am assured of my eternal resting place
Just as soon as I complete my earthly race.
Thank You.
In memory of my mother who died March 21, 1994.
