“Honey, the plane is stuck on the tarmac... Weather I think… As soon as I know what time we will be there, I’ll let you know…Love you too.”
“Dad? It’s me… No we haven’t left…Don’t count on me for dinner… We are being held hostage on this plane.”
What? I’m on the same plane as these people and someone has the audacity to call the person waiting for them at the other end of our flight and claim that we are being held hostage. I can’t believe it.
The third caller is angry and so am I but for very different reasons.
Here we sit on a plane, delayed by weather, where the pilot is telling us as often as possible exactly what is going on, letting us use our cell phones and laptops while we wait… we know it will be at least an hour or two… and that one passenger is angry and telling her family members that we are being held hostage. Unbelievable.
She would apparently prefer to return to the gate, lose our place in line for take-off, and possibly get stuck at this airport for days to come. All other flights out of here are full. There is no way that they can accommodate all of us on different flights.
Held hostage? I think not! I’m angry that she would even suggest such a thing! I’m tired of everyone blaming the airlines and their employees for every delay in flights. Our pilot and flight crew is keeping us informed and they are making us as comfortable as possible. Everyone on this plane, including the crew, wants one thing. That is to get to our destination as quickly as possible.
I’m angry. But not at the weather. Not at the airlines. Not even at the Air Traffic Control system that is antiquated. I’m angry at stupid, selfish people that think the world revolves around them and have the nerve to criticize the flight crew that is doing the best they can under the circumstances. I’m angry at people that dare say that they are being held hostage in a safe situation on a plane that they elected to take a trip on.
Held hostage. Get real.
