Her pearly white feathers spread over the nest hoping to hide what she hoped were just tiredness on her part.
Dropping her beak to her chest she offered a prayer, “Lord,” she whispered, “What happened to the ovals I usually lay? What will my friends say? One looks like a square. One looks definitely like my farmers, son’s soccer ball. No one will want to be near me ever again. They will think these eggs are a punishment for some crime I’ve committed. Lord, how will I hold my head up?”
“Little one,” the air whispered, “trust me. These little ones will make an impact on the whole farm family.
Embarrassed, Sue felt a burden on her chest; lifting her head she searched the sky for some reason why. When none was evident Sue realized she was put on this earth for the enjoyment and fellowship of the creator. She would trust His will for her life.
The sun rose early the next day. The rooster was strutting like a peacock with an ego the size of a basketball. Sue loved Frank he so enjoyed waking the world. Frank strutted by her nest just as her leg started twitching; rising up to stretch, Sue peered under her feathers, embarrassed, sure enough. The square and the round eggs were still there. No ovals with this bunch.
Frank almost quacked, which for a rooster would be quite a hoot.
“Sue what in the world did you eat, with this set? The preachers Bible and the church offering plate,” strutting off the smile on his face so large it had everyone in the barnyard coming over to Sue’s nest for a peak.
The farmer soon came to see why all the animals were pestering Sue. Looking in the nest he clucked, just like the chickens. Every animal in the barnyard was making strange noises. Even her farmer was behaving strangely.
The misshapen eggs had actually drawn everyone closer together.
Sue watched as everyone formed a protective ring around her. They offered her food. The cows came over to shade her from the noonday sun. The horse kept that nipping rat on the other side of the fence all day.
“Lord,” Sue whispered, “everyone on the whole farm is being amazing, loving and helpful. They are all united for the good of me and my little ones. I’ve never seen such unity on this farm. Even the farmer’s son has not picked up a stick all week. Thank-you Lord now I see what you meant, what I took as an embarrassment, has made us whole.”
Underneath her feathers, the eggs began the twitch of birth.
Stepping aside she watched to see what would happen before the setting sun. The other animals joined her sheltering the nest from the wind that had started the dust twirling around the yard.
The square egg pecked his way free of the shell first, standing he glanced around at all the animals watching him. His beak had and extra yellow loop that endured him to them all. Kissing the top of his fuzzy head, Sue said, “Meet my son.”
“What are you going to call him?” Frank asked
The oval shattered her way to the sunshine, like a bull in a china shop.
Sue laughed, “I think my little ball will be Belle, and my son will be Cho short for chosen.”
Frank whose mood had been joyous since Sue had laid the eggs, smiled, “good choice, Sue I think your family has been chosen, chosen to be loved by us all. Now take your little ones to bed.”
Sue could here all the animals praying that night. Thanking God for the health of her little ones. Cho and Belle asked her who they all were talking to. “The creator, little ones, he put us here for his pleasure. He made us, loved us and died for us.” Cho and Belle’s heads bobbed in sleep. Sue smiled tomorrow would be another day.
“Dear Lord, I will never again be embarrassed by what you put in my life. I love you, Good night.” Sue’s eyes closed in sleep.
The animals all drew a little closer. “Who wants the first watch,” asked the horse.
The rat pulled at his whiskers. “May I”
