As a child, I loved being the class clown, and welcomed any laughter that was not at my expense. But there were countless, disastrous moments that I wished the world would open up and swallow me. There was the time my older sister’s underwear, 4 sizes to big for me, dropped to the ground at recess. Or how about the time I had the flu and hurled my breakfast onto a girls’ coat?
One in particular embarrassing moment, more notable above the rest, happened once on the long bus ride home after school. We had stopped at the last elementary school, before heading toward home. And while waiting for the school bell to release that particular school, I got off of our bus, because outside sitting on the ground, as adorable as the cutest picture ever taken, was a kitten, just a few steps from the bus door. I could not resist kittens, so I quickly picked it up and snuggled it close, only to have it quickly displace its contents all down the front of my blouse. I had to ride that bus home for the whole 45 minute ride to my house with every kid, reacting in every way imaginable the entire ride home. It brought a whole new meaning to the song “Smelly Cat.”
Of all the talents the Lord has given me, embarrassing myself, seems to be the greatest among them. I have so many something in my teeth, gaping zipper stories, that it would take me days to tally them all. Even as an adult, I seem to be able to find some way of making every one else laugh and comment, “Boy, I’m glad that was you and not me.”
I also have even been able to include my children in my red faced antics. I took my kids to play at a nearby play ground, where I got the bright idea of showing them my bronco riding abilities. I quickly mounted the stationary zebra sitting on a spring, which was cemented into the ground. As if seeing a grown woman riding a faux zebra, like there was no tomorrow, was not embarrassing enough, God with His own incredible need for a good laugh, had to take it one step further. Some of the events are still a little hazy, but I soon found myself lying on the ground, in a cloud of dust, with the lifeless faux zebra between my legs. When the dust settled enough for me to get my bearings, my offspring (no pun intended) were no where to be found.
But being embarrassed is truly something that is a necessary part of life! I wouldn’t trade its valuable lessons. It has been through embarrassing moments that I’ve learned not to take life so seriously! I’ve learned that it is a tool in God’s hands to humble me. I’ve learned to laugh at myself. I’ve learned to make wise decisions that lead to a better outcome. And I have to tell you, driving by that playground to this day, and seeing that empty spot where that zebra used to sit, has been a lesson all in itself. From Kittens to zebras, embarrassing moments are inevitable! So ENJOY!
