A few minutes later thick black smoke issued from the bonnet of the car. Oh dear, something has happened was my first thought. I slowed down and pulled over, trying not to show my concern to Tim. “Well Tim, we’ll need to walk to the emergency phone to report this to the NRMA road service. Lets sing while we walk …
It was getting dark now as we walked along the side of the freeway, cars whizzing by at 110kms an hour, and I knew my 8 year old son was more than a little anxious. I tried to be cheerful to alleviate his fear, even though my thoughts were far from optimistic . We reached the emergency phone by the side of the freeway, reported the problem, and started walking back as the sun descended behind the horizon. As we walked I explained to Tim that as we were at least an hour from any town I had been told we would have a long wait. To cheer us both while we waited we would have a roadside picnic with the snacks we had in the car. I also suggested we ask our Mighty God to look after us in this situation as we knew that we could trust Him. Tim visibly brightened at this thought. So while we walked we prayed.
We rounded a curve and could see our car through the bright yellow pom-pom flowers of the wattle trees which bordered the freeway and were highlighted further by the headlights of the oncoming cars. We looked again, there were blue flashing lights … there was an NRMA service van there! As we drew closer I could see the service man working under the bonnet of our car.
He looked up at our approach and I started to explain what had happened. He wanted to know why our car was mustard and not green as had been reported. Apparently another car, a green one, exactly the same model station wagon as ours, had been reported an hour before but much further along the freeway, and he had stopped believing ours to be that one. He had also discovered that the oil cap was missing and that oil had sprayed all over the motor and that was what caused the black smoke as the engine heated, the oil burnt and gave off the smoke. Then I remembered I had topped up the engine oil in preparation for our trip to Sydney as the car burn oil regularly. The phone had rung just as I finished, and I had run inside to answer and when I returned outside, had put the bonnet of the car down forgetting to return the oil cap. This wonderful service man, whom I was sure was an angel, was impressed that the cap was still sitting where I had left it and informed us that had it fallen we would not have been able to get to our destination without replacing it. The best he could have done would be a cloth bound by tape to get us to the nearest service station at least another hour or more away.
I thanked the serviceman very much, and praised God for his bountiful care and provision. We climbed back into the car and before I could say anything, Tim suggested we put on some kid’s praise CDs and we praised God together with the music for the remainder of our journey! It was a blessed and precious time for a mother and son to share as our confidence in our merciful God was tested and strengthened. To God be the Glory!
