From ancient Greece until today, people have set up other people on pedestals, as if they are somehow “better” than others. Today, teens have all these “idols” in their lives. Is your hero someone rich and powerful, good at sports or acting, a humanitarian? Think about your hero for a moment and then think about what is “heroic” about that person?
To me, a hero is someone who is worthy of imitation. We all want to be just like our heroes. Little girls go from making believe that they are Cinderella or Belle, which progresses to women trying to follow the major trendsetters. Boys want to be Peter Pan, Superman, and eventually grow into young men (or grown up ones!) who want to imitate Peyton Manning, Babe Ruth, or Wayne Gretsky. The question is, how worthy are they of imitation?
As Christians, we should also have heroes to imitate. The Bible is chock full of them: David, Samson, Moses, Joshua, Rahab, Deborah, Mary, to name a few. (Go the book of Hebrews Chapter 11 for a more comprehensive list!) Each of these people shows us something of the character and the goodness of God, and it is important in those ways to imitate them.
However, the teen and young adult years are filled with many life changes, and you are going to need someone who is “Jesus with skin” in your life, to help you through all that crucial decision-making. The difference, sometimes, between a person who makes good decisions about their life and one who doesn’t is the presence of a hero, good or bad, and what that hero represents to them.
Young beloved, I urge you, pray that the Lord would show you a “hero” in your life; one who embodies everything you would like to be in your Christian life. One (or two) who can help you through the decisions of the next crucial years, through your joys and your sorrows, and the “growing pains” that are sure to come. Trust them. They didn’t get where they are without traveling a rough road of their own. God has taught them many things along their journey. God will use them in your life, and the cool thing is this: that God will use YOU in theirs as well.
As imposing as it sounds to be someone’s hero, I think that I can honestly say with Paul, “Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.” He is the ultimate hero.
When you find someone who imitates Christ in their life, definitely IMITATE THEM!
