A long time ago lived an ole cowpolk
Everybody knowed him as ‘Cowboy Joe’
Now they’s a legend ‘bout that cowboy
Folks say strange thangs happened, long ago
Joe rode an ole mare named Glory
An she’uz with him everwhere he went
He said she use ta be the finest cuttin’ horse
But nowaday’s her old legs were slow and bent
Now Cowboy Joe wuz quite a roper, too
I heard tell he could rope up the wind!
Youngun’s clapped when he pulled out his lariat
An Ole Joe’d rope em an den he jist grinned
Joe jist showed up in town one day
Nobody know’ed where he’d come from
Den he started preachin’ ‘bout Jesus Christ
And how He’uz God’s only’est begotten Son
Now back den I was jist a youngun myself
Why, I could’na ben more’n six er seven
But Ole Cowboy Joe got my attention
When he went to preachin’ bout goin’ ta heaven
Ole Joe’d be talkin’ ‘bout his Jesus
And dem tears jist rolled down his eyes
He’d say “tha Lord’s coming back soon y’all
He’s gonna be comin’ down outta dem skies!
He’ll be a ridin’ a mighty white stallion
An He’ll come take all His chilren on home
Me an ole Glory’ll be goin’ up thare with Him
An on dem plains up in the heaven’s we’ll roam”
Some folks thought Ole Joe wuz crazy
Said he done lost his senses many years ago
Why, they told of him burnin’ down his own house!
After his wife left him fer a feller with some dough
She took off with Joe’s two little yungun’s
Rumor has it Ole Joe wanted to die from dispair
He went to a drinkin’ and a riotous livin’
Till one night Ole Glory gave him a big scare
Seems she shook Ole Joe up perty good
She went to racin’ him cross dem Texas plains
All night long she raced - till Ole Joe got sober
An he jist hung on fer dear life to her reins
After dat Cowboy Joe never took another drink
Said Jesus worked through Ole Glory that night
Joe went to readin’ tha good book his Mama left em
Den he started preachin’ tha gospel of tha light
Now Joe’s favor-rite story wuz ‘bout Elijah
How he took up ta heaven by chariot of fire
Said one day he’uz goin’ ta heaven tha same way
Him an Ole Glory ridin’ together through tha sky
We laughed at Ole Joe fer bein’ so silly
We thought he must be foolin', shore nuff!
Then he hollered “git on along now little doggies,
Yer Mama’s a calling ya” his voice kinda gruff
Den one day Ole Joe didn’t come ta town
Everybody wuz wonderin’ where he might be
There wuz some chatter among tha gossips
They said he’uz prob'ly back on a drunk spree
Now a big storm had blowed in tha night a’for
An' tha winds were a howlin’ far and wide
Some say old Joe got caught up in a whirlwind
When he an' Glory went out fer a late night ride
Others said he musta died while a sleepin’
But Ole Cowboy Joe’s body never wuz found
An' Ole Glory wuz a missin’ - same as Joe
Some thought they fell in tha river an' drowned
I figure Ole Joe an' Glory went up ta heaven
They got caught up in tha whirlwind that night
Glory met the stallion, an' Ole Joe met Jesus
An' they all rode tha clouds to tha city of light
Now if yer ever a ridin’ tha plains of Texas
Some say you can still hear Ole Joe out thare
An if tha moon is shinin bright – look up high
Cause Ole Joe an' Glory’s a ridin' thru tha air!
They say he’s still a preachin’ bout Jesus
An Ole Glory neighs an’ whinnies in accord
Out thare on that lonely west Texas prairie
Many a cowboy has come ta know tha Lord!
