Julie lazily opened one eye. She was lying in the sun, dozing.
“Hmmm? Phineas, I was almost asleep.”
“But Julie, I want to go explore. Plleeeaaase,” he used his most wheedling tone. It is important to note that fleas can be very persuasive when they put their verbal skills to use. However, as fleas seldom feel it necessary to use this proficiency, it is a little known fact.
“If you’re asleep I won’t tickle you while I explore and, when you wake up, you can guess where I have hidden myself,” Phineas finished with a flourish that seemed to decide the matter.
Julie sighed, recognizing a losing battle when she was in one. “Alright, but give me minute to get good and properly asleep before you start poking about.” He was delighted to comply. Within a few moments, Phineas began his quest and Julie had embarked on her own journey to dreamland.
Phineas traipsed along with a spring in his step wending his way uphill. High, thin grass gave easily with his weight as he pushed through. By and by, he reached what appeared to be a steep cliff. Phineas was nothing if not a jumper, so he was quite undaunted. With a mighty spring, he landed in a soft smooth ravine. Gone were the high grasses. Here and there were a few small brown and red stones. Phineas chose the largest of these to sit upon for a rest as he considered his next step. He was surprised that the rock was soft and yielding. He decided to ask Julie about it later.
The path ahead entered a dense forest and began to ascend again. He noticed what looked like a cave among the trees and decided to investigate. Feeling rejuvenated, he set off. Soon enough he reached his destination. There seemed to be rocks at the entrance of the cave and Phineas had to hop over them. The ground made a sharp descent immediately after, and he was not able to gain his footing. He slipped down into the darkness of the cavern.
Fleas can see quite well in the dark, but even so, Phineas could make out very little. The higher grasses were back. He was surprised they flourished so well in the dark. There also seemed to be a sticky substance all around. Every step found him on hard ground, which curiously vibrated with each stride. This puzzled him, but soon even that changed and he found himself on a surprisingly springy surface. It reminded him of the time Julie had blown up a balloon and let him hop around on it. He decided that he would spend the remainder of Julie’s nap playing on his new trampoline. After all, he did not want to get lost in this cave.
It was not long before he heard Julie’s voice calling him from outside the cave. “Julie,” he shouted, “Guess where I am.”
“Oh, my! You have quite a set of lungs, Phin. Speak softly so no one else hears you. What are your clues?”
“I traveled a long path of high grasses, then jumped into a ravine and explored a dense forest. There I found this cave. At the bottom of the cave is a balloon. Where am I?”
“Let me think. I guess the path of high grasses is my arm.”
“Right!” Phineas was delighted with how bright his girl was. He waited to see if she could guess the rest of the puzzle.
“I fell asleep on my side, so the ravine would have been my neck and the dense forest would of course, be my hair. Now the cave…. Why Phineas, you are in my ear, aren’t you? No wonder you were so loud.”
Phineas was gleeful. “Yes! This balloon must be your eardrum. It is quite bouncy.”
“Kindly bounce your way back out before you burst something.”
“Julie? What's this sticky stuff?”
“Ear wax.”
“Ewww!”
“It’s supposed to be there. It protects the ear.” Julie defended the condition of her ears indignantly.
Phineas made his way out of Julie’s ear and began working along her neck. He remembered that he wanted to ask her about the stones he saw there. “Julie, what are these springy rocks? They are wonderfully comfortable for sitting on.”
Julie reached up to her neck and carefully put the flea on her hand. “Those are beauty marks,” she said.
“Ah, beauty marks.” Phineas smiled at his friend. “No wonder you have so many.”
