I noticed the photo album sticking out under the coffee table shelf. I set my needlepoint aside and began flipping through the pages. There’s our wedding day. Then the day we headed off for Texas where Gayla was born. The military life had always been full of fun and surprises. Look at how tiny Gayla was when she was a baby. Kerry sure did enjoy taking his little girl for rides to his kennel at work. There she played with his police dog.
Oh, just look at the pictures of KJ. He was so tiny. Germany was a great place to have a second child. The military to afford a wealth of traveling and excitement. Each page turn showed how quickly the children were growing and how we enjoyed being a family.
There was the trip to Spain for a two week vacation, where we met the most fascinating people and found a favorite babysitter, Daniele. She was a lovely German girl, who loved children. We had been friends ever since.
There were the children, visiting fellow campers in Italy. Gayla was always a friendly little girl. That’s how we had met Daniele. Breakfast in Paris, was a dream come true. Spaghetti in Italy was disappointing. It was so plain, not at all like the American recipe.
Each anniversary photo showed celebration spent with Military friends. What a treasure having all the friends from every possible place in the USA and Europe. Ah, there is Kerry in uniform and me with my co-workers. Hmm…A security job with an opportunity to wear disguises was so exciting. Not bad for a Maine girl.
I set the photo album down as I went upstairs to check on Gayla and KJ. They were fast asleep. I quietly closed their bedroom doors, and began to descend to the living room. I saw Kerry’s headlights coming up the driveway. I put away the album and felt a warm smile cross my face. I’d had enough adventure to last a lifetime. Right now, I’ll just warm up Kerry’s dinner, and sit back down and work on that needlepoint. Adventure, oh yes, I experienced many and would time and time again through the pages of that photo album.
