With the moist and cool breezes to our backs we eventually arrived at our favorite oak and rod-iron bench. Looking out over the little pond where we find a little peace of mind, we rested for just few minutes before we headed out again.
It seemed like today was going to be just like yesterday and probably a glimpse at tomorrow. We had gone this way everyday for so many days I think we could find our way on a moonless midnight stroll, yet there seemed to something in the air today we couldn’t quite describe.
That wonderful fragrance of fresh growing bluegrass mixed with dandelions and violets nearly overwhelmed our sinuses as we rested there, holding hands like we tend to do, watching a pair of Lesser Canadian’s guide four fuzzy brown young one’s over the glassy pond. The energy of spring was almost tangible this morning; the sun was beaming and drawing new life from the earth. Every living thing seemed to be reaching toward heaven with all their strength.
We were getting a little chilly so we pulled closer to one another; I put my arm over Cherie’s shoulder and rubbed her arm to help warm her up. And we sat there for a good while just enjoying the serenity of nature in the ecstasy of spring time. Sometimes talking breaks up the connection we have with the rest of creation, and this seemed like one of those times because we didn’t say anything for the longest time.
Then, there was a lull in activity around the pond and the easterly breeze slowed to a wisp as the sun’s energy stepped up another notch. We sat back on the bench and stretched out our legs like we were getting ready to move on, but it wasn’t time yet. I looked over to see Cherie looking up to the sun with her eyes closed and smiling like she was directly connected to that life reviving source of energy.
Her face was shining as the sun’s power seemed to reflect back from somewhere close to the surface; I cold see her skin responding as she flushed with pink and rosy tones. I sat watching in amazement as the young woman I fell in love with decades ago was revealed; quietly masked behind the lines that years of hard life had added on. I was mesmerized, transfixed by this intimate glimpse of her natural beauty from deep within. Tears welled up so I could barely see as love’s memories overwhelmed me.
I didn’t know for sure, but it seemed like she knew what was happening because her smile grew and grew as the young girl in her was being drawn out; then she opened her eyes and looked straight into mine. I hadn’t seen that grin in years; it was as playful and intriguing as when we first met. She reached out and gently placed her hand on my cheek. Without saying a word, a lifetime of loving thoughts and eternal emotions passed between us. It was like her touch was the conduit between our hearts and we were reliving it all in a single moment. She let go a sensually complete little sigh and said, “Isn’t this wonderful?”
I could barely manage an answer because my heart was in my throat, I just responded, “perfect sweetheart, just perfect.”
I few minutes past when we took each others hand and strolled on down that familiar path once again, but we both had a little quicker step and our hearts were beating a little stronger that day as the Son’s Light had rekindled our love’s vision.
