Susan, Mandi’s closest friend, was convinced an admirer was leaving them, and they had spent the last four lunch hours trying to figure out who it was.
Mandi heard Susan’s noisy arrival in the next cubicle, and looked up to see her head pop over the partition. “Another rose this morning? Hey girlfriend, that’s five days in a row! How long’s this gonna last without at least a clue as to who he is?”
“Actually, he left a note this time,” said Mandi.
“No kidding? Let’s see!” Susan exclaimed.
Mandi held it up to her, and while Susan snatched it away, said, “It says I’m supposed to call Jacob, and that I can ask Jacob any question I want to, except who he is. I think he wants me to know he’s not a kook or something.”
Susan asked, “You mean Jacob Stewart in accounting?”
“Do we know another Jacob?” Jacob generally ate lunch with the two girls.
“So have you called him yet?”
“It’s only ten after eight Susan.” She saw Susan looking at her as if she was a loon. “I’ve called. Twice. He’s not in yet.”
“Call again. Now. Here’s the phone.” Susan shoved the phone into Mandi’s hand.
“All right, all right!” Mandi exclaimed as she dialed Jacob’s extension.
This time Jacob picked up. “Hello, Jacob Stewart.”
“Um, Hi Jacob, It’s Mandi.”
“Oh, hi Mandi. What’s up?”
“Well Jacob, you see, someone’s been leaving roses on my desk for the past few days, and today there’s a note with the flower that said I should call you," stated Mandi.
“No kidding,” he interrupted.
“Nope. It said you’d be willing to answer questions about the person who’s been leaving the flowers, except that you’re not to tell me who it is.”
“Okay, fire away.”
“So you know who it is?” She asked.
“That I do,” he replied.
Mandi began to shake all over.
“Pull yourself together, girl!” Whispered Susan.
“Okay then, questions.” Mandi began firing question after question in rapid succession. “Does he work here? Is he single? Is he a stalker? Do I know him?”
“Yes, yes, no, and yes,” replied Jacob.
Mandi was desperately trying to remember her questions, the order she had asked them, and how they matched up with Jacob’s answers. She was pretty sure the answers were all good.
“Is that all, Mandi?” Asked Jacob.
“Um, yes. NO! Wait! Do I get to meet him?”
“The person whose identity you seek, would like the pleasure of your company after work today, by Memorial fountain. That is all I can share with you, now. Seriously, my other line is ringing.” And with that, Jacob hung up.
It was the longest day of Mandi’s life. Why did she wear this blouse? She was sure that time was standing still. Finally quitting time came, and she and Susan grabbed the elevator. Susan said, “I wish I could go with you! You better call me as soon as you get home, do you hear me?”
“Okay,” she replied, but Mandi had barely heard her. Her thoughts were already on this rendezvous in the park. Why did she wear this blouse? Thoughts about who her admirer could be kept running through her mind. There was hardly anyone here at this time of day. There was only one other person over by the fountain, and his back was to her. As she came alongside him, she chanced a look at his face. There stood Jacob with a beautiful bouquet of roses in his hand. As he turned to look at her, she said, “Jacob, I never knew…”
“I hope you’re not disappointed,” Jacob said, handing her the flowers. “I’ve been attracted to you, but I was afraid you wouldn’t be interested. So I decided to start by sharing my flowers with you.”
As she took the flowers from Jacob, she could barely believe it. Jacob Stewart? She had always thought he was a great guy. Mandi reached for this hand, and asked, “Would you like to grab a cup of coffee?”
“That would be a great place to start.” As they walked hand in hand out of the park, Jacob said, “I really like you in that blouse…”
