The music was lively, their steps were noticeably familiar to each other, yet invigorating. Grace's hands fit so naturally into his as they danced to the second song. But as the music came to an end, he quickly searched the crowd with his eyes, only to see Rebecca talking and laughing with a distinguished-looking gentleman. His heart beat faster, and his mind filled with strange thoughts. The sudden rush of energy consumed him to the point of action. James had to think quickly. Just then an idea came to him. He touched Grace's bare shoulder and pointed out that her old "beau" from college was sitting all alone at a corner table. Grace smiled rather slyly at James and said, "Remember, who you're going home with," before she started walking off the dance floor. James waited what seemed like an eternity, for the applause from the crowd to die down before approaching Rebecca to ask if he could have the next dance. Rebecca turned her head away from the distinguished gentleman and smiled and nodded at James before he could even say a word. They became dance partners the rest of the evening.
The grandfather clock chimed 12 times. The music finally stopped and the musicians started taking down their instruments for the night. The silence between James and Rebecca created an uncomfortable moment. Then Rebecca broke the silence with, "Thank you for a wonderful time." James smiled and bowed before leaving her. Rebecca followed him with her eyes as he quietly approached Grace who was walking toward the door.
