Mr. Grump slowly rolled over and stretched with a big yawn. He could hear the other dogs in the neighborhood having the usual morning bark-fest. He just wasn’t in the mood. He wondered what day it might be. Then the aroma filled his stubby nose. Sunday! He could smell roast cooking in the crock pot. It was his favorite day of the week. Usually, he could count on his people, Rick and Kate, to give him a few morsels. His plan was always simple; gobble up everything and beg for more. He waited, but time seemed to stand still. He could swear his growling tummy even started keeping time with the ticking clock. He wondered when they would be home. He hoped nothing had happened to them, if something had he might not get anything besides his dry dog food. Perhaps the preacher was just long-winded again. It was Mr. Grump’s opinion roast was better after a long sermon; a little burnt on the edges with thick gravy – perfect. He quivered thinking about it.

The garage door! His people were home, finally. He jumped up and down greeting them. He knew a little extra attention could be beneficial to him. He wondered why they always went to so much trouble fussing over fixing up the table and making all the other stuff that really didn’t have much taste. He stretched up Rick’s leg, gave a whimper, and a little scratch for an exclamation point. It was obvious the roast was ready for samples.

After Rick obliged with a small piece of the savory meat, Mr. Grump couldn’t help himself he started choking, hacking, and coughing. It was dreadful. He wondered what was wrong. He couldn’t breathe, he just kept trying but nothing helped. Rick grabbed him and started squeezing him and then beating on him. Mr. Grump thought he was going to die! He knew he’d been a little bad taking all that stuff outside last time it rained, and then there were just a few chew marks on Kate’s slippers, but at least they matched. No way did he deserve this sort of mistreatment.

Kate was on the phone. She said she was talking to the Vet. Now we’re getting somewhere. Kate said a few a-huhs and hung up. She turned to Rick and informed him, “You can try but the Dr. Morgan doesn’t think the Heimlich maneuver will work on a dog. He said just let him relax and he’ll be ok. This is probably why it’s not good for dogs to eat people food.”

Mr. Grump grumped every dog knows that’s just an urban legend. He heard all about it during a bark-fest just last week. Now he knew he would need to beg harder for a while to get Kate trained again.
