Knock, it shall be opened to you
Seek and you will find
Once revealed never will it leave your mind
The mystery’s of all mankind
How quaint Cherilyn thought a deserted church, with a riddle nameplate. The quote seemed strangely familiar. I’ve not been to church since Phil left me high and dry. Did my mind totally block out churches, because I know I have never seen this church before, what the heck if she left now she’d never know how this place materialized from nowhere?
Raising her hand to knock as a crow flew across the sun shrieking “Naw.” She glanced up over the carved door was the word Come. Tapping the thick door, she watched amazed as it immediately opened as if it had been waiting for her response.
Seated was the tiniest man she’d ever seen. His eyes twinkled under his long white bangs. His smile warmed her cool insides.
“Come in child. Are you here for the journey? What have you come to find?
Flipping her copper hair away she replied, “Answers if you don’t mind?”
“Your answers are here,” he replied as the door magically glided closed behind her.
The door was now a stone wall and before her the little man’s desk gone! He barely reached her waist leading her forward the church was now a room of doors.
She remembered a book she read as a child about a room of doors. The kids in the adventure had gone thru the Bible; she didn’t have time for this.
“I’m sorry, I need to leave I’ll find my answers some other time.”
“Umm” he replied jiggling the ring of keys in his hand, “its lunch time” walking into the shadows he vanished like a fly.
“This isn’t funny which door lets me out?” she shouted into the shadows.
“Try one thru nine there the Old Testament ones.”
No, she was trapped the only way to escape was to go to the end. “The kids at least had friends with them,” she shouted at his shadow.
“I’m here” a forgotten voice echoed quietly above the beating of her heart. The voice was one she tried to often drown out.
Resigned she walked thru door one, into total darkness, closing her eyes in disbelief, her head began to pound. Opening her eyes she saw the sun rising to her left to her right the moon and stars. Walking thru the room flowers, trees, water even animals appeared. A hippo cantered past her, as a giraffe swept her hat off her head. Reaching the next door she felt the splash of water as a dolphin laughed at her. Cherilyn barely managed to open door two. The room was damp the floor wet, above her was laughing.
“Tell us your dream now funny one, who’s above who”
A quieter voice called “Little brother, grab the rope we’ll pull you up”.
Cherilyn ran her hands along the walls, no way out but the rope. Joseph, Cherilyn remembered her favorite Bible story.
“Lord”, Cherilyn caved, “I know I’ve turned from you,”
The well vanished, before her stood door fourteen, pushing thru she stood at the cross. Christ’s blood dripped unto her hands, raising them to her face her tears flowed. A hand on her shoulder opened her eyes to an empty tomb. Behind her the Christ she had rejected when her life fell apart. Turning she wept at his feet.
“My precious child I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” Touching her head her headache vanished. The church appeared before her amazed eyes.
A hand touched her shoulder, the little man with mustard on his mustache and a twinkle in his eye asked if her question was answered.
“Who, how why,” she asked
“Some other time,” he replied” there’s quite a line,” pushing her out the door.
Stepping outside the door she saw a man tears steaming down his cheek reach for the doors handle. Than the church vanished like a fly.
Remembering her friends favorite radio station, Cherilyn turned to 90.5, to here John and Sherry talking about Alexis, before playing an old hymn. The verse played in her head the rest of the day. Redeemed I’ve been bought by the Blood of the Lamb, forever his child I am.
Are you? He’s here for you no matter what you’re going thru; he’s only a prayer away.
