"Jessica.... It's time for dinner." A voice called out from down stairs. Jessica heard
her mom summons her for dinner, but she just couldn't keep her eyes off the new neighbors moving in three houses down. She peered through the little white mini blinds with the hopes that no one would see her being curious. She watched anxiously with the hopes of catching a glimpse of something as the movers unloaded the truck. So far, all she could learn about her new neighbors was that they had plenty of stuff in boxes. Just as she began to think spying in this way was useless a black truck pulled up with a man a lady and two children. Could it be family she thought? Maybe, but why does everyone look so sad?
Jessica Gibson ... what are you doing? Jessica jumped down from her bay window trying to think of something to say. She didn't want her mom to know that she was being nosey, but her actions had already told on her. "Come on down for dinner her mom said with a look of disappointment on her face. Everything in her wanted to take just one more peek, but her mom waited at the door for her to come. Jessica couldn't believe she had wasted a whole hour watching boxes only to miss the good stuff.
The aroma of good southern fried chicken hit Jessica's nostrils as soon as she stepped down stairs. Her mom Ruby began to talk about how her family would gather around the dinner table and eat meals just like this one. Her face would be glowing with happiness, as the memories seem to be playing like a movie in her mind. Then in a quick second her smile turned into sadness. Jessica never could understand why those stories about family would make her mom filled with such mixed emotions. She was silent for the rest of dinner. Jessica hated to see her mom sad, but she was happy that she didn't have to hear a lecture.
With each step Jessica took back upstairs, thoughts of her new neighbors flooded her mind. They were a very old couple, but it was something different about them. Jessica knew that she shouldn't but she went right back to the bay window to take a look. The movers had gone, but the same black truck was pulling into the driveway. This time it was two men in black and blue suits that got out. There was a small child who cried as they carried her inside. She watched for a few more minutes and decided to settle in for some sleep. The picture of the crying little girl and the two sad children rested on her mind as she drifted off into sleep.
Intensely bright car lights glared through Jessica's bedroom window. She jumped up from her bed to go and take a peek. The same black truck with one man accompanied three older kids to the front door of the new neighbors home. They too looked very sad. What is going on over there Jessica began to think. Why are all these sad children being brought to this house? Jessica watched as her neighbor let the kids in. The neighbor looked around as if he were afraid that someone maybe watching. Jessica's mind began to run wild. Maybe they're some kind of kid abductors. Why else would kids be brought to their house in the middle of the night? Or maybe there selling kids to sweat shops like on T.V. Jessica decided she would tell her mom in the morning.
The alarm clock hadn't rung three seconds before Jessica hit the off button and ran down stairs. Mom I know you told me not to spy on people, but mom our new neighbors are buying and selling children or something. Ruby looked at her daughter with a look that was uneasy to read. Jessica tried to explain, but her mom stopped her. "Jessica I have told you that you can't judge people based on what you think you know about them. Our new neighbors are ministers at that new church down on Cardinal Drive. They take in abused children from social services when there is nowhere else for them to go." Tears began to flow from Ruby's eyes. "What's wrong mom, Jessica asked." "They are good people Jessica, I know cause they took me in years ago when I was about your age."
