One of the most memorable Thanksgivings I’ve had recently was my first Thanksgiving in Guatemala as a missionary. I had lived there for four months at that time. I went to Thanksgiving dinner at a friend’s house. Before we started to eat, everyone took a turn saying what he or she was thankful for. When it was my turn I said, “I’m thankful for my dad. He’s equal to four men.” I explained further. When I moved into a new apartment a month earlier, I needed to have curtain rods and towel racks hung. I also needed a washing machine hooked up properly. One day Hector, someone who I worked with, came over and put up one curtain rod in the living room. This was a difficult task. My roommate and I had to make a trip back to the school to get the right tools. We also had to make a trip to the hardware store to get these plastic things you need to put on a screw before drilling it into a cement wall. Most houses in Guatemala are cement to protect them from termites. Hector needed to get back to the school after only putting up one curtain rod so he didn’t have time to put up any more. Another day Guayo, a member of the church where I went, came over and put up a towel rack in the bathroom. He ran out of time before he could do more also. Another day Wayne, a coworker, came over and finished hanging the curtain rods in the bedrooms. Finally when I thought everything was ready in my apartment, my roommate used the washing machine and it wasn’t level and the water drained out through a hose into the back patio. I called Dale. Dale was another missionary who went to my church. He came over one day after work and made the washing machine level and hooked up a hose to the washing machine so the water drained properly. Thank goodness I can now wash clothes and I have curtains instead of sheets in the windows.
Before moving to Guatemala if I was moving into a new apartment, my dad would have done all of these things the day I moved in. I never knew what a blessing this was until I didn’t have it anymore and I realized my dad did the job of four men. Thanks Dad!
