I believe. I believe in angels. In this case I believe in a very special kind of angel. I am not really sure if it is a cherub or a seraph. Perhaps the angel I am thinking of is the kind that we see in classical art. Or perhaps it is a comical angel that looks like cupid. This angel may only exist in my imagination like my childhood imaginary friend. Whatever image may be conjured I know that there is something very special at work in a child’s world.
In my childhood I was not particularly impressed with having to take art classes. I couldn’t draw, sketch or paint then and I still can’t. When clay was the medium I would inevitable settle on sculpting a snake or an ash tray. Sunday School crafts were a relief because they usually only required a child to punch out the pre-made pieces and then glue or tape them together perhaps with some coloring involved which I did not mind.
Even paint by numbers seemed a challenge at times. As I reflect on this I cannot help but wonder about that special gift that seemed to surround all of my efforts in the realm of my childhood handwork.
So, now you are likely asking, “What does he mean by that?” Allow me to attempt an explanation. I have already described the fact that I was in no way gifted in a creative or artsy way. I would drag my attempts at arts, crafts and sculpture home with dread in my heart. Somewhere between school and home a miracle would take place. As I entered the house my artwork never failed to become masterpiece quality when my mother or father saw them and put them on the refrigerator or gave them a special place on a table or desk.
I am to this day convinced that there is a guardian angel of children’s creative efforts that uses the time between school and home, scouts and home or church and home to transform simple craft work into the masterpieces that parents admire so fervently.
