You could see the care and devotion put into the work straight away. All you had to do was look at the potter’s hands and know a masterpiece of love had been crafted. The dark half moons of the nails caked with mud and dirt, dust choking the pores and lines of his worn and tender hands. A streak of clay had dried above his brow where he’d paused to wipe the sweat away before it trickled into his eyes again.
As the clay painstakingly took shape, you could see his emotions in every detail. Patiently bending to his task, his knowledge of what could be never staying his hand. The potter had worked through eternity on this task, yet it felt like time passed in the blink of an eye.
Crafting a toe here, making an elbow bend just so there, patience and love slowly brought forth his own image for the world to see in the once formless soil. The realization of ‘the work of his hand’* was perfection. A beautiful, flawless man glistening in the sun just waiting, it seemed, for life to be breathed into him. He sat back with a deep breath and saw that it was good.
The potter’s heart sang with joy, “We shall call him Adam.”
*Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)
We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.
