There was always something fun to do at the cabin. We would often play in the woods during the day or hunt for frogs in the cool of the night.
But when I think about the red cabin the first thing that comes to mind is fishing! My Grandpa loved to fish and he loved to take us fishing. We would wake up before the sun came up to go hunt for some worms and load up the boat.
One worm and two pieces of white corn. That was what we used for bait. I always wondered at the combination, but never dared to ask. We would meander around the lake to some of Grandpa’s favorite spots in hopes to land “the big one”. Some days it seemed like we had caught our limit before lunch time. Other days I would fall asleep from the boredom.
As the years went by technology changed the face of fishing. I remember the year Grandpa got a depth finder. It was amazing to be able to watch a school of fish swim right under us on a computer! The device would even tell us how deep the fish were.
Something that is so obvious has always frustrated me when it comes to fishing. If the fish aren’t hungry, they won’t bite! As a kid it would drive me crazy to see them on the depth finder only to have them swim by without biting. I knew the fish were at a depth of fifty feet. I knew my line was fifty feet down. And I know that worm and two pieces of white corn had to look delicious! Why weren’t they biting?
When it’s all said and done, fish aren’t predictable. I guess it’s the same with people.
Christ has called us to be fishers of men. How in the world do we fish for men? What should we use for bait? I suppose a worm and two pieces of white corn are out of the question!
In the same way that my Grandpa taught me about the worms and corn combination, Christ taught us how to fish for men. Jesus’ combination for ‘people fishing’ was “salt and light”. We are to live lives full of the hope and joy that God gives in front of our fellow man. That’s the “bait” for lack of a better word.
When people see that Christ truly does give peace in the midst of trials it gets their attention. When they see Christians leading the charge in global disaster, they see light. When we live the full live that God has given us, people stand up and take notice!
People won’t come to the living water unless they are thirsty. Let’s be salty!
