I would like to comment on the uniquely human capability of communicating through speech, writing, and reading in contrast to the rest of animate creation. Evolutionists claim that human communication evolved over time. That may be true, (for example, try to read 15’th century English) but their claim that it evolved from animal ancestors simply has no evidence to support it. Quoting Noam Chompsky from the late Henry Morris’s book, The Biblical Basis for Modern Science, p.378, who said, “Human language appears to be a unique phenomenon, without significant analogue in the animal world…. There is no reason to suppose the ‘gaps’ are bridgeable.”
Obviously reading and writing are extensions of our verbal capabilities. There is no other creature that comes remotely close to the extensive and complex communication skills of humans. God gave us this gift as a part of His image imprinted on us. His Word would do no good if we could not receive and understand it. Animal brains are programmed. Our brains learn. It is demeaning for us to deny God the glory due Him by giving credit to impossible natural phenomena, first of all for our origins, and than for our uniquely human qualities, including the ability to read and write.
Reading is the most efficient way for human kind to acquire knowledge that is not learned by experience. Paul instructed Timothy to avail himself of the opportunity to read, no doubt to enhance his ministry as a pastor. (1Ti.4:13) It is no wonder that the westward pushing pioneers of early America considered it of utmost importance for schools to be a part of the lives of their children. Parents who are serious about their children’s welfare will insist that they learn to read well and comprehend what they read as opposed to being entertained by too much TV or computer games. As a young child a whole new world opened up to me as first my mother read to me and unlocked the mysteries of the printed page with Bible stories and nursery rhymes, and then when I began to read on my own. It was exciting to observe the same phenomenon with our children and now our grandchildren.
The gift of reading what some one else has written (including God’s writings) is so singularly human, so beyond what even the most “educated” chimp can perform that it must be God given. Only the naïve would think otherwise.
