"Life is the Emmaus Road, We travel it not alone, For besides us walks our risen Lord to guide and keep his own". How many times in early 1990 did I read this saying, written on a beautiful plaque hanging on the wall in my apartment in Pennsylvania. Here I sat 1400 miles from home a long way from Louisiana. I had moved myself and my three year old son so far away to escape the abuse of my husband. The only friend I had was a girl I had grown up with, she and her husband had sent me the money so we could leave. So early easter morning 1989 we boarded a greyhound bus and rode for 34 hours to find our new home. I will not lie to you the days were hard and the nights were long, even though I had a friend the lonliness was immense. Louisiana, and my mom were so far away, I felt alone. My friend Debbie and I went to church most sundays, the lessons I heard felt as if they were directed straight at me. One example was at a Assembly of God, the preacher had a very powerful spirit about him, even sitting on the back row, I felt as if he were standing right in front of me. I felt as if his finger was pointed right into my very soul as he said. "God brought you here for a reason, you are here because his road has led you here , so far away from your home. He did not leave you alone, He is right here beside you. He is walking beside you all the way, and he will never leave you." I felt something I had never felt before, When I went home I looked at the plaque hanging on my wall and for the first time I understood. Through everything , through the pain, the lonliness, the desperation, and the poverty, He was there I had never been alone. I realized that he had guided me that far.I rode on a bus thirty four hours with a three year old with no problems. I had a job one week after I moved there. I had an apartment with help from the state within a month of moving there. I had great childcare at seven dollars a week, the church paid for it. I had a friend who cared enough to give me the shoulder I needed to start a new life. God worked through her, she gave me the encouragement to make it until it was my time to come home. Look at all he did, We never did without, When I felt down he was there, through his spirit or through a phone call that lasted for hours until I felt at ease or a friend showing up at the door just to say hi. My road led me to Pennsylvania then it led me back home to Louisiana. Though the road has been long and so hard, through the same heartache , the loss , the pain, now that road has led me to my heart, A husband I prayed for, a house full of kids, and the chance to write, to be remembered, to put my words on a paper and have someone read them and maybe make an impression on them. Words to be remembered by, My Emmaus Road, The one I traveled not alone, For beside me walked my risen Lord, Who guided and kept his own.
