A quill and ink shall do well, I think,
To express the thoughts of a heart.
For words spoken forth, spoken truly with passion,
Are the basis of any great art.
To think that such a simple device
Could change the hearts of men!
There is no doubt, when it is thought about,
That the sword must give way to the pen.
Yet is seems quite absurd that the writing of words
Could so influence the dimension of time.
That a life could be changed or a mind rearranged
By a simple verse or a rhyme.
Yet the past is replete with tales bold and discreet
Of lives changed by the power of writing.
For words that are right, remove darkness, bring sight
And restore truth to its proper lighting.
When the light of such truth shines out bold and profound,
Then the power of change is discerned.
And so judgment and wisdom that is reasoned and sound
Bring hope to those who have learned.
And the truths that endure from the foundations of time
And remain beyond what we call “ The End”
Are given life and the power to speak forth love sublime
And turn bitter foe into friend.
Our words can paint pictures for others to see.
They can show forth a realm long unseen.
They can exalt to the Heavens the vilest of creatures
In their lowly estates, cruel and mean.
They can move us to action and proffer the power
To stand in the gap for a stranger.
They can fill us with longing, incite deep desire,
And give strength to stand firm amidst danger.
Time began with a word and shall end with a word.
For the Word of The Lord is our master.
And since we were spoke forth in the likeness of God,
Our words can bring peace or disaster.
A man’s words are the means by which his soul is expressed.
By his words a man’s life may be measured.
A word spoken in rashness may inflict a great harm,
But kind words will forever be treasured.
So let each man give thought to the words that he speaks.
For the canvas of life may be altered,
By the stroke of a word, carelessly spoken or heard.
And we’ll find that our labor has faltered.
For speaking is art. It is art most sincere.
It shows forth the mind of creation.
If we speak up in our love and not out in our fear,
Then our works may bring joy and salvation.
All great works ever known among men throughout time
Began in a mind with a word.
Then the word took a form and hue and a shape
And brought forth what is seen or is heard.
And we take these great ideas and we lock them away.
In museums, we set them apart.
We read and re-read, we look and we listen
And we do all to preserve this great art.
And in doing such things we show forth what we know;
That whether seen, felt, experienced or heard
There never has been nor shall there ever be
Great art apart from a great word.
