Well, the first is obvious: time to write. In the article I just read and in things I have heard throughout the years, a writer must write EVERY DAY at least an hour a day, no matter what is written. This time to craft and learn and develop the talent and the mindset is needed. The discipline is needed as well. I have to figure out when and how I can get this time. Is the time now? Or is it in the future still? Is there a way that I cannot see? “Ask God” is what I say!
Second, a place to write is on the list. I am a bit ahead here in the game because I do have an office. In the article I am reading, it says that the place needs to be a place devoted to writing, not the kitchen table or some such that has to be cleared for each activity. A place that is mine for writing is what is needed and the right equipment.
Thirdly, I need a good computer and keyboard, the latest Word software, a quality printer, a computer desk, and a comfortable desk chair. And there are a few reference books that are recommended, no, actually stated that I need to have to which I should refer as I write. And this takes money. I also need supplies: paper, pencils, pens, envelopes (for mailing manuscripts and query letters, etc.), etc. This all takes money devoted to my newly acquired occupation. But then what new undertaking does not take money to get set up?
Fourth, I need time to read. I need time to read about writing and time to critically read what others have written to help me learn the craft. I used to read quite a lot but just have not found the time in recent years. Plus, I don’t think I have ever tried to read critically to truly analyze how others write.
This written endeavor about writing is a part of my education. One of the exercises that is given as training is to write… just write what comes, and this is what is coming right now. In addition, it is adding to my confidence and to the fact that I AM A WRITER. It is stated that no one becomes a writer without saying this phrase to themselves but that there are many who have said it who never got the courage to become what they have spoken. I pray that I be given the courage by the good Lord to do this.
I admit it scares me. I admit that my stomach is even now talking to me. I admit that I don’t know a bunch of stuff, but I know that I can learn once the decision is made to invest into this path, this plan, this part of myself that has been always there. Always.
Now I must find out from God where I start and how I start. “Gentlewoman, start your engine!” When the flag goes down, I had better be ready to go! Thank you, Jesus!!!!
