Let’s Not Have it Again
I opened the door to the kitchen pantry to find something to cook for dinner for my hungry family. The ground beef sizzled and popped in the skillet just begging to be joined by other companions. A little of this, a little of that all combined in a casserole dish. Somehow the combination of flavors proved to be successful that evening and the family left the table saying, “can we have that again sometime?”
When I was young with a husband and two small sons, I had a propensity for making up new dishes and putting foods together without benefit of a recipe. Our two sons had developed a way to let me know the success of the newest experiment. If the recipe did not meet their approval, they would say, “This is good, mom, but let’s not have it again!” My children had found a kind way to rate the cooking success of their sensitive mom.
Most of the time I did not write down the list of ingredients so that future preparations would not always produce the same results. My husband and sons were not only considerate of my sensitivity they were also patient with the inconsistent results of that creativity.
About two days after this concoction had been enjoyed and successfully reviewed, the phone rang. It was a co-worker from my husband’s job. He shared how my husband had raved about the casserole I had prepared. He asked if I would be willing to share the recipe. Well, of course I was totally flattered but then I stumbled around trying to recall exactly what I had included in that casserole.
I never heard how the co-worker fared with the preparation of my “recipe”. However, the story is one that always brings chuckles when it is retold at family gatherings. Those God given creative tendencies have followed me throughout the years. However, I have learned the value of taming and managing God given gifts. God given talents are meant to be developed, so that using them will result in successful outcomes that bless others.
I still put recipes that I have created on the table for friends and family but only after they have been tried, ingredients adjusted and details written down. If anyone calls for a recipe I am blessed and rewarded to be able to share all the details.
