“Yes my angel”! “May your star so shine like the noonday Sunlight after rain that you may succeed where I have failed”. “May your life beam hope through your smile to all that come in contact with you, replied her mother”.
Martha watched as her daughter danced away to the country music playing on the radio. She never knew that was her farewell prayer for her only daughter.
Later that night she had a seizure and died of heart attack!
Lucy then moved to the big city, to live with Aunt Mabel who managed a Care home for the mentally retarded senior citizens.
Her dancing never left her all the while and this got her many times in trouble with her conservative aunt.
She was fond of visiting the patients whenever she was around. She always encouraged them to sing and dance along with her was her favourite pastime, this caught their attention and had a therapeutic effect on them.
But when Aunt Mabel knew she was around she’d invent more chores to tie her down, this was in order to dissuade her niece from coming to the care home as often.
She did this on the pretext that the patients needed to be calm as much as possible, so that when her boss come around on their impromptu visits they’d meet an organized centre.
Seven of the senior citizens, incidentally, were former socialites and public figures of repute in the city then enquired after her absence.
These have had their health conditions dramatically improved through young Lucy’s therapy.
Learning from the nurses about Lucy’s where about and her circumstance; they decided to undo this rash decision of the care home’ manager.
They wrote a unanimous letter and sought for the state government to award the exploits of their ‘young therapist’, with both a scholarship and a national recognition award.
The health commissioner in response sent an experienced psychologist to assess the situation because mental health was a sensitive matter.
His mission was to be in disguise in other to stay neutral as much as possible; he then arrived as a consultant practitioner.
Meanwhile, Lucy was allowed to visit the care home again for the Christmas party.
But right in the presence of the psychologist, she simply transformed the whole place with her songs and dance; such that the all the patients shone with a brilliance he had never experienced in all his thirty years of practice as a medical practitioner.
He held his cool and waited a few weeks more to observe the patients’ behavioural pattern if it didn’t become hyper-active because of the partying effect.
He was shocked to find out that they weren’t only relaxed, but exuded more joy!
In his speech at the awards night, the psychologist confessed that he regarded the charm and grace which Lucy displayed in aiding the recovery of the Care Home patients.
He said; she was such a little angel that looked like an unsung hero in the midst of elders and yet affected these lives though bearing the loss of her own too on the inside.
