Alice looked from left to right, her soft fuzzy hair made little friction noises against the fresh sheets.
Wait, her soft sweet scent was gone. I can't find her! No more red hair, no one was stroking her eyebrows and whispering, I love you, in her ears today. No one let her hold their finger, when the white shirt ladies hurt her.
Please come back, Alice whispered, as the medicine the white shirt lady gave her closed her eyes.
Waking up her throat hurt. The white shirt lady kept cleaning her neck. Now when she cried her throat made a funny noise.
Red hair lady come back when your here the hurts are softer.
"Little Alice there's someone here to see you tonight." Wrapping the blanket around her the white shirt lady put her gently in the arms of a volunteer.
Sitting in a rocking chair the soft gray haired lady, arranged her oxygen, her heart monitor wires and her IV"s, wrapping the blanket tighter, she stroked her eye brows, nose and lips. The chair swayed back and forth.
The lady whispered "Hi sweet Alice, my name is Mary is it O.K. if I love you tonight. The next two hours Alice could feel Mary"s beating heart. Mary let her hold her finger as she sang to her and told her Jesus loved her.
The white shirt came and said "Thank-you Mary, will we see you tomorrow night?"
Mary kissed my forehead "Of course," leaning close she whispered in my ear, "See you tomorrow night Alice honey."
I love cuddle time. Mary smells so nice and smiles at me when she holds me. The white shirt ladies leave me alone when Mary is there.
Today the white ladies cried by my bed. When Mary came to cuddle, I reached toward her cheek and felt the wet water on her skin. I wish I could tell Mary I love her, but the hole in my throat makes it hard to make any noise.
The chair is swaying slower today. Mary is talking softer and my eyes are so heavy. Mary kissed my forehead and said "Jesus loves you little Alice."
My throat is not making the whooshing sound anymore. My eyes are closing, "Look Mary I see Jesus."
Many mothers cannot spend months on end at the bedsides of their precious little hosipital bound babies. They depend on the volunteers to rock their little ones to sleep at night. Some parents forsake their little ones totally.
When my nieces and nephew were at Riley's Hosipital for children we were priviliged to meet some of the volunteers who hold the little ill children with hearts full of love Thank-you
