The only one I know will stay to the very end.
Through times of tribulation, and sadness, and fear
She was the one who whispered, "Don't worry, I'm here."
She taught me to read the Bible, and moreover, to pray.
"Don't forget that God is with you each and every day."
When I disobeyed, she'd discipline with a stick.
"My girl, you'd be better off if your head weren't quite so thick."
Now as I hold her hand and she struggles to breathe
I look back to that time and finally agree.
I'm an independant woman, with plenty of ideas
And it's all thanks to my mother, and friend for all these years.
But now she lies there, small and frail, on her deathbed
So I leaned in close to whisper and this is what I said:
"Thank you Mom, for all you've done, and all you've yet to do,
and I can't wait for Heaven's gates so I can see you.
I love you, Mom, and please tell God this message that I send,
'Take good care of my teacher, my hero, and my friend.' "
