Topic: Teacher (10/26/06)
To impart knowledge or not to impart knowledge? That is the question. Why teach? Why learn? What good does knowledge do us anyway? Most people would admit that an awful lot of what they learnt in high school is never used again. I have heard that if you went to school in Leonardo Da Vinci’s era by the time you had finished your schooling you had been taught everything known to man at the time.

Imagine that knowing everything there was to know. How great would that feel? What would you choose as an occupation? Anything you liked.

Well let’s see I think I will be a doctor this week I know everything there is to know about the human body.

Then next week you might say well that was a pretty boring week I think I will be an architect this week see if I like that.

But when you think seriously. Is there a greater vocation than that of teacher? To be the imparter of knowledge to young minds in the hope that they might use it for the benefit of all. You can be content in the knowledge that you are giving them building blocks for their future. To look around the classroom and realise you may be teaching the next Marie Curie, Isaac Newton or a future prime minister. What a great and wondrous responsibility.

Ah, but wait what then if you could be a teacher of the Christian faith. To know that your teaching would have eternal consequences. Is there a higher calling in the teaching realm? I think not dear reader, I think not.

You are so correct that teaching has eternal consequences and is a "great and wondrous responsibility." I liked your reminder, too, that we may be teaching the "next Marie Curie, Isaac Newton, or prime minister." Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject!
