As I was walking down the road, the weeping willow tree stood beckoning me. I wanted to swing under the strings flapping in the wind, laden with small green arrow shaped leaves.
The sun like a glorious ball of yellow delight kept me from seeing the end of my hopes for a long swing.
Two little old (to me) ladies were walking up to my trailer door; they told my mother they were starting a Bible Club, there would be singing, a missionary story and a snack.
We all went almost every child on our street, our parents all jumped on, and hour of peace.
It wasn’t Sunday school the stories were amazing, all about children who did not know God. Some who had never heard of Jesus, all won to the Lord through a missionaries love for Christ in China, Africa, Haiti, New Mexico, Sweden, Each week was an adventure into new places we had never been. They had pictures made of flannel; they moved over intricate cloth backgrounds that we all wish we had the ability to draw.
They were the sweetest ladies I had ever met and I was hooked, missionary stories held me spell bound weekly, they always left you begging for the week to leap from day to day. Three o’clock never came fast enough. We all stood in my yard, waiting for the clock to move. We would dash across the road and crowd into their tiny living room enthralled for another hour, we would leave with our little cookie or small wrapped candy unknown to us with a piece of Christ planted in our memories forever
I married at eighteen and became the story lady for my church. The stories I told I learned at the feet of two amazing women who dedicated their life’s to children.
Ruth Connor worked for Child Evangelism for forty or fifty years she was 89 when she died of cancer, to the day she died she was a witness for Christ. No one who entered her room left with out knowing her Savior by name.
I’m older now than she was when I first met her and thought her ancient.
Who challenged you? Who has directed your life? Who led you to your path of devotion to Christ? Mine was two missionary women with a passion for sharing with the children on their street,
