“Why, what’s wrong?”
“The cops are behind us!”
That familiar copper taste in my mouth coupled with my racing heart testified to fear. Unpaid tickets, expired registration and no insurance were bound to catch up to me eventually. Every encounter with the police was a fear-filled trauma.
I wasn’t afraid of the police. I was afraid of what they represented; consequences.
“Don’t turn around! Act natural.”
“Why, what’s wrong?”

“I need help! Someone call the police!” Personal peril trumps fear.

“Here, keep this cross. It shows how your sins were paid.”
“Thank you, pastor.”
It wasn’t that I needed a memento or a receipt. I needed what they represented; forgiveness.
“You see that policeman?”
“Yes I do, daddy.”
“If you ever need help, go to him.”
“You see that pastor?”
“Yes I do, daddy.”
“If you ever need help, go to him.”
