What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? Matt. 16:26 KJV
A prosperous man lived in a land called Cornucopia. The man had everything life could offer, except his soul was focused on money and what it could buy. He thought of his wealth both day and night. Waking in the middle of the night he wondered about his assets and how he could use them to gain more. Sleeping little, his spirit was tortured, and he didn’t know it. Taking his restlessness as being intelligent because he thought of how he could obtain more, he continued in his pitiful state.
Many years passed and he continued to obtain more houses, cars, the newest gadgets, unsurpassed servants, the finest chauffeurs, and entertainment that that made life seem easy and happy. The only problem in the world that he had was that none of these satisfied him.
Soon he was inviting the most influential people in the land to festive gatherings. Most of the invitations were welcomed and the kings, queens, presidents, and high ranking people delighted in joining him in his festivities. He had so many valuable items he could not relax without having them policed at every event. Otherwise he felt insecure about their safe keeping, even with the elite.
Not getting enough rest, the poor rich man became ill. His health became so poor he had to seek the best physicians. They came from foreign countries to give their best at diagnosing his ill health. They poked and prodded, they tested everything in his body but found nothing causing ill health. Reaching the end of their resources to help him, they called in psychologist and psychiatrist to determine his mentality. Placing the man on anti-depression pills did not help. It was hopeless.
To top it all, the man had become less wealthy in paying the high cost of all the medical expenses. He called in the best economist in the world to get his holdings back on track. Nothing helped to improve his financial condition, and he became even less wealthy from expenditures of the knowledgeable experts.
Not knowing what else to do, his head physician placed him in the psychiatric ward. “Try to get some rest and think about pleasant memories. I’m sure you will be better in a couple of weeks.”
The dismal man had a policeman to stand guard outside his door. By now he was so worried about His health that he was beginning to imagine someone was trying to take his life. He became so paranoid about his demise that the psychiatrist could not help.
Lying in his bed, he was totally without hope. It seemed his whole world was crumbling. Employees walked away, because salaries were not paid. The policeman could not stand guard from lack of payment. Walking away he shook his head and mumbled, “Wretched soul.”
Day after day the man was in a miserable state. One beautiful day a nurse stepped in to see him. “How about a little change of scenery this morning? I’m going to clean you up, shave you, and put some nice clean clothes on you. Then we will go for a nice walk to the garden.”
Saying nothing, he stared straight ahead. Once spruced up, the nurse placed him in a wheel chair and wheeled him out into the nice sunlight. There someone was talking to a group of people. He said, “Do you feel that you have lost everything and don’t know where to turn?”
At this the dejected man perked up. Thinking he said to himself, “Yes I do. I have lost everything. I once felt as though I owned the whole world and now have nothing left.”
“I have the answer to your problem. The solution is to be introduced to the Son of God. His name is Jesus. He is the answer to everything in life. Truly what does it profit you to gain the whole world and loose your soul? No money in the world will do you any good if you loose your soul. No policeman can protect you if you serve the enemy of Jesus, who is Satan. Nothing will help you if you do not turn your heart over to the King of the universe.”
The man listened intently. I have found the answer to my problems. I must speak to him about meeting this King.
