Why must he endure this pain? In prayer, he had asked the Father to spare him from a horrible fate. He had never done anything wrong, he simply wanted to share the Father’s love. His stomach churned, his breathing was erratic. He knew that it was almost time.
Blood and sweat poured from his brow and puddled on the ground. He could no longer fight the tears or deny the agony. From the bottom of his soul, he wanted to scream at the top of his lungs. Another part of him wanted to escape this misery. But, he knew what was going to happen; it was something he just had to do.
He could hear a crowd coming up the road. But, this was no ordinary crowd, this was a mob. Slowly, he picked himself up off his knees. The past few years of traveling had taken its tole on his young body. He was still in his young thirties, but felt so much older. And now, he realized it didn’t even matter anymore.
The garden was dark, with the moon as its main source of its light. From the path, the light coming from the crowd was slowly advancing. He could remember enjoying waking up to a sunset, as the light slowly gets closer. But this was no sunset, this was a light that he did not want to see get any closer.
This was it. His time had finally come, and there was nothing else he could do. He wished that his friends were still conscious. They barely seemed to stir as the crowd grew closer. It would mean the world to him to see a friendly face; and then he did. Leading the crowd was the face of a very close friend. It was someone whom he had confided in many times. For a moment, his heart eased.
Reality set back in. He knew what was about to happen. There was no denying the fate he would endure. These men were only here to do what they had to do. As they came close, his friend stepped out from the crowd. The friend walked up and looked deeply into his eyes. While fighting tears, the friend leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. This was the beginning of the end.
